About Hair Loss
The hair growth cycle is composed by the following phases: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.
- Anagen phase is the phase in which the hair grows and it lasts 2 – 6 years. During this phase the cells of dermal papilla intensively communicates with hair follicle, promoting the hair growth.
- Catagen phase takes over when Anagen phase ends. During this stage, which lasts about 2 -3 weeks, the dermal papilla moves away from hair follicle, reducing its size.
- Telogen phase is the resting phase of hair growth cycle and it lasts 3 – 4 months. The communications between hair follicle and dermal papilla are suspended. In this phase the hair “is dead” and it can fall applying a gentle pulling.
All the phases of hair follicle cycle are regulated by dermal papilla (DP). A healthy person has more that 80% of hair that growing (Anagen phase) and 15% of hair are falling (Telogen phase) on daily basis.
Hair loss is characterised by decrease of the physiological ratio Anagen/Telogen.
