Advance in Diabetic Foot Care: Sudoscan’s Promising Technology

Sudoscan is a fast, easy-to-use, and safe non-invasive tool, which provides standardized skin conductance measurements within three minutes. The Sudoscan device measures the ability of the sweat glands to release chloride ions in response to an electrical stimulus.

Sudoscan has been used in the management of various conditions including diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and fibromyalgia. With CE and FDA certification, this technology offers reliable and consistent results with the unique benefit of an objective measurement of small nerve fiber function.

Considering these positive findings, health professionals are interested in learning more about Sudoscan and its potential uses in diabetic foot care. Further reinforcing Sudoscan’s efficacy, several studies over the past 23 years have evaluated the tool’s reproducibility and efficacy in detecting diabetic neuropathy (DN) :

  • A study confirmed that Sudoscan can detect neuropathy in patients with DM, with a sensitivity of 78% and a specificity of 92%, equivalent to or better than clinical neuropathy scores. Sudoscan results correlate significantly with clinical measures of neuropathy, somatic and autonomic function testing, and pain scores. Feet ESC was significantly decreased in patients with painful DN compared with the value in patients with nonpainful neuropathy. Test–retest reliability is excellent for the feet. • In another study, Sudoscan proved to be a valuable tool, providing insightful data on sudomotor function. The results obtained from Sudoscan measurements significantly contributed to the analysis and findings of the research. Its non-invasive nature and ability to assess sweat gland activity efficiently made it an indispensable asset in the study. • Additionally, another study confirmed the utility of Sudoscan in diabetic foot care by showing significantly higher feet asymmetry in diabetic foot patients compared to others. The test’s discriminative value and predictive power highlight its importance as an early marker for neuropathy evaluation. (Source : The role of Sudoscan feet asymmetry in the diabetic foot).
